TUTORIAL | Scrappy Log Cabin Block

I love making blocks with my scrap fabrics.

There’s something about mixing un-coordinated fabrics together to make a block look coordinated that strangely appeals to me.

(I hope that makes sense?)

I think it’s also the thrill of pairing fabrics you’ve used in separate projects and fusing them together into one little patchwork square – ahh, the memories!

(It’s the simple pleasures, right?!)

In my opinion, the Log Cabin block has to be one of the best stash-busting blocks you can make.

It’s quick, easy, super simple and can be so visually affective you swoon at the sight of it everyday!

So here I present to you a little video tutorial of how I make a very free and easy Scrappy Log Cabin Block!

If you’ve watched this and have any questions, post a comment here or on my YouTube channel and I’ll be more than happy to answer them.

Do you have any other blocks you would like me to demonstrate? Pop your suggestions in a comment and I’ll take them on board!

Quilting Expo | The Low Down

Quilting Expo was yesterday! Yay!

I had a wonderful time teaching, chatting, eating (and sewing!) with a lovely group of ladies.

I showed them how to make four classic quilt blocks paired with some yummy and fresh modern fabrics.

The big block winners of the day would have to of been the colour-blocked Log Cabin…

and the Lone Star block (my personal favourite!)

With the Lone Star block, I’m planning to make a sweet lap quilt out of it – stay tuned for that idea to hopefully come to life!

The other blocks we tackled were a Flying Geese variation and the-always-easier-than-it-looks Dresden Plate.

There were a few other projects that had been planned but time got away from us and they went undone…*insert sad frowny face*

It was a great day all around and I was definitely warn out by the time I got home! (It was a rare early night into bed for me!)

This coming week I’ll be working on a side commission for the BFF and then I’ll get back into piecing together my Mini Double Wrench Block Quilt as well as the many other numerous things that need to be planned and done!

Sneaky Sewing…

Here’s just a quick update on my colour-block paper foundation pieced Log Cabins (phew what a mouth-full!).

I snuck in some time during the week to finish the brown, grey and black blocks and then continued on piecing them all together with the sashing.

Then I found the perfect size batting in my stash for this mini-quilt! Bonus! After it’s quilted, I’ll bind it with the same cream fabric used for the squares in the sashing.

At the moment, I haven’t had to spend any money on making this quilt; it purely consists of scraps and fabric I had hoarded away for a rainy day!

I’ve never made a mini-quilt before. Regardless to say, I love it! Cheap, small and quick to make! What’s not to love?!

All In A Day’s Work

In my opinion, the best way to pass a cold and miserable rainy winters day would be to rack up a few good km’s on the sewing machine, pump out some extraordinary quilt blocks and projects and then sit and admire your accomplishments for the rest of the afternoon! That’s how my day was spent yesterday (minus the rain and misery) and how the rest of today will go – hopefully!

I’ve dived right back into a project I had previously started but realized I didn’t really like what I had started. I refer to this Gumnut Babies quilt top that I shared a few posts ago. I felt it was a bit bland and boring – to brown, messy and flat. I didn’t feel that ‘thing’ towards it….so it’s been rejected!!

And this is now the direction I’m going in! I’ve added a few more coordinating prints with bolder colours and patterns and decided to do a very modern Log Cabin sort-of design.

It’s only in the early stages of design and the layout of the blocks isn’t firmly decided yet as I still have a few more to make.

With this project, I’m totally going in blind while making it. I’m not following any pattern or specific instructions. Just like all my other quilts I make, the design is all up in my head and I just hope that I am able to translate what’s in mind into an aesthetically pleasing quilt. Fingers crossed xxx!!

I’m the first to admit that I spend way too much time on Pinterest – possibly border lining on addict. However, I was so inspired by a particular pin that I used it as inspiration and made some sweet little wreaths!

These were made by using left over knitting wool/yarn, wrapped hundreds of times around a foam wreath, hot-glue gunning store-bought felted flowers in a pretty bunch together and then attaching some contrasting ribbon as the hanger bit! Ta-dah! A pretty wreath for your front door! It took next-to-no-time to make and the materials where very cheap to buy. So get your craftiness on; make it and be surprised at the results!

I’ve finally finished hand-piecing my How Does Garden Grow? Competition quilt and am now playing around with different techniques to add more interest etc. to the centre of the flower design. I’ve made a few Dresden Wheels but am currently stuck on making them the right size to be able to stack them on top of each other, as if the flower was still blooming.  It’s a head scratcher, but I’ll work it out in the end. Here’s peek…

Right, well I’m off to sew! But only after I make myself a green tea and turn the heater on! Brrr, it’s cold!
