Quilt Labels 101

QuiltLabels101 Thumbnail

Quilt Labels. They’re one of those things you usually forget all about during the glorious triumphant moment of finishing a quilt!

By the time you’ve conquered sewing down that last part of the binding, you’re thinking, ‘Yes! That’s it! It’s finally finished!!’ No more hand sewing! No more schlepping this heavy quilt all over the house.

But no.

There’s still one last little bit of sewing that needs to be done. And it’s one of the most important elements you’ll add to the quilt.

The Label.

Quilt Labels are like the heart and soul of a quilt. They list when the quilt was made or finished, who it was made by, who it was made for, it may list the name of the quilt and/or display a special message or saying about the quilt or be directed to the person who will be receiving the quilt.

The creative possibilities of making quilt labels are literally endless. There are no boundaries or rules to what they should look like and there are no wrongs or rights to how they should be attached to a quilt.

Caleb's Quilt Label

The way that you want to make and attach a quilt label is entirely up to you!

But in any case, here are just a few ideas that may help…

#one: Quilt Label Panels

These panels are a great idea for those of you lack time or confidence in making a label from scratch.

Labels like these tend to be personal and direct with themes like ‘Made by Grandma’ or ‘First Baby Quilt’ or ‘Congratulations’ etc.

Quilt Labels 3

Most quilting, fabric or haberdashery stores should sell similar type label panels that you can buy and stash away for a rainy day.

When it comes to writing on these fabric labels, I usually like to use Sharpie pens.

Hello Sharpies

The two that I tend to use the most are the Sharpie Rub-a-Dub Laundry Marker (with a thicker type nib) and a Sharpie Fine Point Pen – both in black.

#two: Hand Written Labels

Sometimes, often than not, I make my own labels.

Quilt Labels 2

For the base of the label I’ll cut out an adequate size of 100% Cotton Homespun (in a practical colour) and write, using one of my Sharpie pens, all of the information that I feel is needed to accompany the quilt.

Personally, I feel that this particular technique is a little boring and uncreative. Recently, most of my labels have been created using the next idea…

#three: Hand Embroidered Labels

I love handmade embroidered labels. There’s something magically personal and sweet about attaching a little label that has been meticulously stitched together. An embroidered label just takes the quilt to a whole other level of being specially made for a particular reason or a very special person!

Quilt Labels 1

Amelia's Baby Quilt Label
Amelia’s Baby Quilt Label

Just like the hand written labels, I use a foundation of Cotton Homespun (usually in white or cream) and gently sketch in the details of what I want to embroider in lead pencil. Then using DMC threads/floss in matching or contrasting colours to the quilts’ theme and then carefully stitch the label into life.

#four: Fancy Handmade Labels

If you have any left over blocks or elements that didn’t quite make the front of the quilt, you can very easily turn them into the centrepiece of the quilt label!

Geo Dreams Quilt Label
Geo Dreams Quilt Label

An example I can give you is the story behind my A Summer Bloom Quilt Label.

Summer Bloom Label

I made a Dresden Plate that was to be attached to the front of the wall-hanging (I sort of had a blooming flower effect idea rolling through my head at the time…). The idea was a complete flop but I didn’t want to waste the time I had put into making the Plate. So instead had a spark of creative genius and made it into the label of the quilt!

#five: Print Your Own on the Computer

This particular type of label I’ve never made, so can’t quite comment on it in too much detail.

But if I were to make a quilt label on the computer I’d possibly use a Photoshop/Illustrator type of software (or an online editing site like PicMonkey) to design the type of label I wanted. I would save it as a particular size with the right ppi (pixels per inch) and then print it onto special A4 printable fabrics that I’ve seen at office supplies stores and fabric/quilting stores. They usually cost a pretty penny which is why I’ve never really given it a go.

Now, there might be one question you’re all asking me right now and that is, ‘How do I attach the label to the quilt?!

Ahh yes, good question!

Well, the method I like to use is appliqué.

HeatnBond

I use a product called HeatnBond Lite that is a lightweight iron-on adhesive that can be sewn through either by hand or using a sewing machine – perfect for any quilter’s appliqueing needs!

I cut the same size amount of that of the label then iron (using a hot dry heat) the shinny side of the paper to the back of the label, wait for it too cool, peel the paper backing away from the label and then iron the label front side up to one of the bottom corners of quilt (usually the left).

To secure the edges, I then carefully stitch a blanket stitch (or buttonhole stitch) around the edges ensuring that I don’t bring the stitch through the top of the quilt.

And ta-dah!! A Quilt Label is completed!

Hopefully I’ve answered a few questions that people have sent through to me in recent weeks and have given some inspiration to those of you have mental-blanks when it comes to these types of things! (Don’t worry, we’ve all been there!)

If you want to see me chat a bit more about Quilt Labels, check out this video I posted on YouTube!

Mini Craft Haul!

Whenever I walk into a craft store, it’s inevitable that I’ll walk out having spent a ton of money on supplies that I really didn’t need but just had to have!

Surely, I’m not the only one?? (C’mon ladies, speak the truth…)

So over the weekend, I ventured into a local Spotlight store and got a little carried away…

To be honest, there were a few things I specifically wanted to buy (the Fat Quarters and Hobby Fill) but the rest were bought on a whim and the thought of ‘Oh, why not?’

Here are the deets of what I got:

Wooden Craft Keepers (Hedge Hog & Owl) by The Red Thread
DMC Stranded Thread/Floss in colours: 913, 959, 993 & 3812
Assorted Pastel Brads 60 pack by Francheville
‘Hello Sunshine’ Die Cut shapes by Kaiser Craft
Assorted Birthday stickers by Artwrap
Kraft & Cork stickers by Francheville
Saffron Craig ‘Bees’ Fat Flats | http://saffroncraig.com
Prints Charming ‘Spring Swing’ Fat Flats in Pink/Orange & Blue/Green | http://www.printscharming.com.au/home.htm
Elements Grey Stripe & Simple Green Triangles Fat Flats
Hobby Fill, 500g

So there’s just a little share of what I’ve recently bought.

I think my favourite thing is the two Wooden Craft Keepers.

They really are ridiculously adorable!

PS. Have you noticed something different??

My lovely blog has had a little make over!

Modern, clean and simple yet still keeping a lot of the features from the previous themes I’ve had.

This particular theme is called ‘Sorbet’ (ohh, lovely!).

Stop-Motion Embroidery #2

Late last night I had a small moment of triumph!!

I was determined to get this embroidery finished!

And I did it! Yay!

So this afternoon, during a lull in our Mother’s Day celebrations, I uploaded and edited all of the photos I took and made this rad little film…

The pattern I used for this was from Urban Threads.

If you’re a mad keen lover of embroidery and love something a little bit more modern/alternative to that of the more traditional embroidery designs, I urge you to take a look this awesome website!

They have ahh-mazing stuff!

(And the prices aren’t too bad either!)

I always love having a good little needle-point on the go…

It keeps my fingers and mind busy when everything else around me is a bit hum-drum and beige!

Cheerio my friends

So Many Side Projects!

This is how my sewing list works…

I have a main project/quilt on the go at all times – currently it’s my Friendship Star Quilt, which is in a state of half-started quiltiness!

Then I have lots of other little side projects sprouting out from my sewing room, (usually lying on a coffee table or sitting mid-stitch on my desk), that I seem to begin to occupy/procrastinate my time with.

This post is dedicated to those side projects that are currently distracting me away from quilting this!

{Side Project #ONE}

Stop Motion Embroidery

When I get a chance to sit down in front of the telebox, I’m coolly stitching away at this number.

Heart Embroidery
It’s current state!

Every two minutes I take a photo of my progress, resulting in an effect that looks a little like this.

I’m so close to finishing this one! Hopefully I’ll be able to edit and upload it within the next few weeks!

{Side Project #TWO}

Mother’s Day Appliqué

This Sunday in Australia we’ll be celebrating Mother’s Day and because I’m as broke-as-two-bob-watch, I’m making this for my mum!

Ready to start stitching!
Ready to start stitching!

It’s a sweet little applique design I found in a quilting book in my library called 101 Full-Sized Blocks.

I thought this would be cheaper and a lot more personal than buying her real flowers – at least these ones won’t die in three days!

I’ll hand-stitch a satin/buttonhole stitch around all of the shapes, baste and bind it turning it into a mini wall quilt.

{Side Project #THREE}

Heart Block Video Tutorial

Another Quilty Tutorial is on its way to be uploaded onto my YouTube Channel.

You may’ve seen this cheeky little sketch in my Instagram feed a week or so ago…

IMG_2681

I’ve always loved the pixelated looking heart block design…

So I’ve drawn up my own design and will be sharing the how-to process with you very soon!

{Side Project #FOUR}

Mini Spool Wall Quilts

Mini Spools

I made up these blocks sometime late last year and have been wondering what to do with them ever since.

Happily, I was inspired by my Mother’s Day project and quickly whipped them up in one evening to the point of just stitching on the binding.

The over-all purpose of these making these little wall quilts is to sell them in my online madeit store,Love along with Side Project #FIVE…

{Side Project #FIVE}

Little Wallets

I made some more of these this week and still have another three waiting to be completed!

Little Purses

These five pretty little purses are waiting to be sent out to new homes…

If you live in Australia and are searching for a last-minute Mother’s Day gift, these could be what you’re looking for!

 ***

So there we have it. Five little side projects waiting their turn for my attention.

Well actually, some of them aren’t really that little

If only there were more hours in the day…

5 Things I’m Loving Right Now!

#ONE

{Embroidery}

Over the weekend, I managed to squeeze in some time to start a new embroidery project.

I can’t remember the last time I had a needlepoint project on the go – I think it may’ve been sometime before Christmas…??

I was inspired to get back to the hoop when I re-watched a video I made last year called Stop-Motion Embroidery, where I took a photo of my work in-progress every two minutes.

It actually turned out to be a pretty rad little film – so now I’m motivated to do the same thing with this project.

This is currently where I’m up to…

blog7

I’ve limited the colour palette to just pinks and reds – an unlikely challenge if I may say so myself!

I have no idea how long this little side venture will take me to complete.

But know this: I’ll definitely be posting the final embroidery and video right here once it’s done!

#TWO

{My Easter Show Ribbon}

In Sydney Australia, during two weeks around Easter, there is a huge Agriculture, Food and Crafts show called the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

This is a huge affair in the Sydney (and neighbouring rural districts) social calendar and is a highly prestigious show that spans back over a hundred years or so.

(You may have seen a certain Royal Couple visit this in the last week or so…!)

So to join in on the festivities and atmosphere, I entered in a few of my favourite quilts and one of my embroideries.

To my surprise, one of my quilts received an elusive Easter Show Ribbon!

IMG_2656My darling ‘Happy Quilt’ won me a beautiful Highly Commended ribbon!

I was and still am totally stoked that one of my quilts is of Ribbon Winning quality!

Happy! Happy! Happy!

#THREE

{Nephews}

Boys1

I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to be able to spend a lot of time with my four nephews each week as they only live (quite literally) down the street.

The oldest is six turning seven in May and the youngest is only a darling eight months old.

Each one of them possesses a one-of-a-kind cheeky and super-cute personality.

They also love being typical boys – playing LEGO and video games, watching Adventure Time (which this Auntie LOVES!!), eating tons of chocolate and generally getting into anything they can get their hands on!

The minute I came across this image on Pinterest…

I immediately thought of those four little men!

(In a loving and precious kinda of way of course!)

{British Invasion Fabric Range by Riley Blake Designs}

Source | Riley Blake
Source | Riley Blake

If you’re new to reading my blog you may not know the love I have for all things British!

So when I heard that Riley Blake was bringing out a collection with all things typically Britishy, I flipped my lid!

I literally went into ‘fan-girl’ mode and swooned over all of the prints in the collection!

I’m really hoping I can get my hands on a Fat Quarter stack at the up and coming Sydney Craft and Quilt Show in July!!

I want it so bad!!

#FIVE

{Tea}

Sadly, here in Australia, we’ve waved goodbye to summer and are currently in the thick of a chilly start to autumn.

It seems like the weather has gone from hot to bitterly cold over night!

However, with the colder weather comes an outbreak of tea-sipping fever!

IMG_2432

One of the best things I love to do in the whole wide world is to make a cup of tea, snuggle under a quilt, pop on a good DVD and gobble down some good quality chocolate!

Ahh, heaven!

Over the last few weeks I’ve been enjoying a good brew of English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Peppermint and Green (with lemon) teas.

 ***

And onto other things…

My goal for this week is to finish the quilt top of my Friendship Star Quilt (only four more blocks to go! Whoo!) and maybe even get some quilting done on my New Year Resolutions WIPs

In an odd kinda way, I feel slightly guilty for not spending time on getting my WIPs done when I was keen-as-mustard to do so at the start of the year.

My time and efforts have been diverged onto other projects and ideas over the last few months that these WIPs are literally (and typically) sitting lonely in one corner of my sewing room.

So, the intention is there…

Hopefully it gets fulfilled!

Happy Sewing Friends! xx

Procrastination: Nailed it!?

In my opinion, I’ve been very good in getting up to date with all my uni work: that is – readings, meeting first assessment deadlines, homework tasks etc.

(A big pat on the back for me!!)

But today on the other hand, procrastination has set in.

And to fill that space I’m making some quilt labels! Yay!

(And listening to One Direction – Midnight Memoorriieess!)

I’ve literally been working my fingers to the bone (no, not really) stitching away to get them finished as this coming Friday is the day for my Sydney Easter Show entries to be dropped off.

The Happy Quilt & Show Worthy Quilt Labels
The Happy Quilt & Show Worthy Quilt Labels

I also still need to make and attach a rod pocket to the back of my Happy Quilt so that it can be hung!

AND the fact that I have two pretty major-ish assessments due this week makes the next 7 days or so a little bit scary to face…

(Hence my Sunday procrastination phase!)

Plus, add on everything else that happens in a week of my life and you’ll be where my head space is at!

So perhaps I should shake myself out of this little procrastination slump and get things going…

Oh, but…must I really…??

I’d much rather stay in my little quilting bubble where everything is happy and carefree…

*sigh*

Okay…

Textbooks and Microsoft Word are coming out to play…

HSF! xx

PS. I also hope to film another block tutorial sometime this week or this coming weekend. Only something quick-ish and simple. That way I can get it edited and published lickety-split! 🙂

Sewing Room Tour!

If you’re a regular reader of this darling little blog, you may have notice that I didn’t post up a weekly WIP update on Monday, as I have for the past month or so.

This is mainly because there is nothing to really update you with i.e.. nothing has changed since I last wrote about my WIPs. (My laziness/procrastinating ways are finally showing!)

However, this week I feel very proud to introduce to you a tour of my sewing room!

I love this space!

It’s where I feel the most comfortable.

Where I feel the safest.

The most inspired.

Freely creative.

And connected to the rest of the world.

In the video I show you where I sew/quilt (duh!) but also where I write, shoot, edit and publish my blogs and videos.

It may not be the best kind of sewing space as some others may have (look up ‘sewing studios’ on Pinterest and you’ll know what I’m talking about!) but I’m thankful for my mum giving up her little study space for me to have my very own little sewing space!

IMG_2423

I also made a second video with some other extra bits I couldn’t quite fit into the first Sewing Room Tour video.

2013 Handmade Christmas Low-Down

December really is the silly season!

My silly Christmas face!
My silly Christmas face!

It’s not every day that I would rock out in a felty-jingly-sparkly antler headband with a plastic Christmas crown on my head and make funny pouty faces at my computer…

But this Christmas, I did.

(And I am not ashamed of it!)

Along with that, this Christmas I also followed on the tradition of my Handmade Christmas pledge.

The majority of gifts given this year were handmade, a few were not. (Hey, I’m only human!)

First off, I made six Lil’ Santa Stockings personalised with hand embroidered names for my four nephews, one for a good friend’s son and another for my 30 year old brother!

IMG_2323

I filled each one with an array of ‘boy’ things such bouncy balls, lollipops, stickers/tattoos, a boxes of chalk, Pez and other fun stuff personalised for each boy/man!

IMG_2325

They all went down a treat and I couldn’t be happier!

 Moving on…

For two of my close couple-friends I made some very cute Wine Bags.

IMG_2324

I bought them each a bottle of some organically produced Shiraz (with a very pretty and simplistic label!) and popped it in the bag. I also placed a handmade Hessian Bird Ornament around the neck of the bottles as an extra little gift.

For my oldest brother and sister in-law, I gave them four Christmas Tree frames made from popsicle sticks, each with a photo taken of their sons this year.

IMG_2327

I thought they would become sweet mementos to place on the Christmas tree each year.

Each of these gifts featured in my 12 Days of Christmas Crafts Series I posted on YouTube (and my blog) in the 12 days leading up to Christmas.

If you want to see how each of them have been made and want to get into some early inspiration for Christmas 2014, follow these links…

So, my family and I enjoyed a lovely Christmas together this year, remembering and giving thanks to the Lord for his wonderful gift of Jesus to us.

(After all, that is the real meaning to Christmas – presents and Handmade Gifts just doesn’t cut it!)

Our celebrations don’t just end on Christmas Day as it was my second eldest brother Graham’s 30th birthday!

(Happy Birthday Bro!)

IMG_2328

And now today, we celebrate the coming in of a New Year!

(Yeesh, I think I need a holiday off from all this celebrating!)

And one last thing…

Not only is this my last post for 2013 but it also happens to be my 100th blog post published!!

Wowzers!!

ONE HUNDRED blog posts where I’ve rambled, whinged, experimented, taken chances, celebrated, shared and grown within my self and my own creativeness!

That sure does put a happy spin on my end of year reflections and celebrations!

 HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS!! xx

See you in 2014 for lots more quilty fun!

Christmas Crafts & Itchy Fingers

Last Thursday eve I helped host a Christmas Craft Evening at my local Spotlight store. Together with staff and customers we had a very festive evening full of Christmas crafts, sweet treats and some lovely lady chats.

Here’s what we made!

Felt Bunting, Embroidered Homespun Ornaments, Fabric Scrap Quilted Christmas Tree Wallhanging
Felt Bunting, Embroidered Homespun Ornaments, Scrappy Quilted Christmas Tree Wallhanging
Hessian Birdy Ornament with hand stamped JOY
Hessian Birdy Ornament with hand stamped JOY message

The Christmas felt bunting along with the embroidered/sequinned homespun ornaments were the biggest hits as everyone was welcome to sit down, make and take what they had created.

Everyone did such a wonderful job – the amount of creativity that there is out there is just phenomenal!

+++

This week, like a moth to the flame, I found my way back to my Double Wrench Mini Block quilt and have finally started quilting it! Huzzah!

The quilt in it's current state!
The quilt in it’s current state!

As usual, I’m feeling very impatient to get it finished so I can share the sweet success of completion with you all!

My itching fingers have also found their way back to my Yellow Sampler Embroidery, which has been an ongoing project since earlier this year.

IMG_2185

I’m on the home stretch to finishing it that today I bought a second-hand frame for it, ready to be hung quietly somewhere in my house!

Over the next few weeks, as Christmas inches ever so closer, I’m planning on filming a few Christmassy | Quilty | Crafty videos that I hope to upload onto Youtube (it involves hexies!!)

I’ll too begin planning for my 2nd Annual Handmade Christmas – a pledge to make and give only handmade gifts and cards for Christmas.

(I made this pledge last year: you can read Part 1 and Part 2 here.)

So I shall say farewell! (As I quietly freak out to myself about how fast the Christmas Eve deadline is approaching! eek!)

Happy Sewing Friends! xx
